It was midnight when Ava sat at the table alone in the old staff lounge, it was pitch black and the only light came from a small candle sticking out of a muffin that sat on the table in front of her. Ha, she still remembered the surprise from the warden when she demanded that she needed a banana muffin and a candle every year when she started working with him for the Night Walkers. It was a birthday tradition of hers, and she did everything she could every year to celebrate it. It wasn't to just celebrate her birthday, but it was to remind herself about her life back with her father.
You see, when Ava was young she never, ever got to have a birthday party. Even if her father was sober enough to know it was her birthday, he never cared. It was always up to her to make it special, so on her birthday she'd have her own celebration at midnight. That afternoon she'd take some money to the corner store to get her ingredients. The store didn't sell cakes, but they did have muffins. Ava's favourite was the banana, and it was the closest she could get to a cake anyway. She'd sit at the window while her father slept and watch the candle in the window and blow them out, always wishing for the same thing. To be loved; first by her father, then Jeremy, then by herself.
She laid her arms out over one another on the table and placed her chin on it, staring as the candle slowly melted. She didn't know what to wish for this year. Love is what was making her feel so terrible recently; a fact she was still coming to terms with. So, now she was left without a birthday wish. Ava gave a sigh and closed her eyes while she thought about it, slowly and carefully like she had trained her brain to think. Wax began to drip and dry onto the muffin as time passed in the quiet, dark, empty room.

---------Jeremy knew what day it was. How could he forget? After spending years obsessing over her such a thing as a birthday did not take a moment's thought to recall. He used to get her white roses, but such a color hardly fit the woman who lived in Sangvene today. She was not innocent, sweet, and pure, she was dark, cruel, and corrupted while still managing to hold moments of kindness and hope in her heart. Instead he brought her red. Not the bright red of a traditional romantic, a dark red flower which seemed like velvet. ---------He leaned on the door frame of the entrance, watching the candle light flicker across her features. Tossing the flower on the table, it landed perfectly beside her muffin. "Happy fourth birthday," he said softly.

Ava looked up, raising her head from the table and letting her left arm fall to her lap. She picked up the dark rose in her hand and let it turn between her fingers. She didn't turn to Jeremy, she knew he was there without letting her eyes meet him. She felt fragile, weak in her core and it infused her with doubt and a longing to be free from this hell-hole she had wanted to call home. So successfully she had kept up a wall between herself and these stupid things known as emotions. It was the Great Wall of Ava but somehow it had been broken down; shattered to indistinguishable pieces that made the rebuilding process as overwhelming as trying to jump across the ocean.
She brought the rose closer to her nose and breathed in the sweet smell, but something hidden behind her consciousness sent a shiver through her spine. She knew the colour was different than usual, and the small part of her brain that still wanted to hold onto the past found this to be slightly alarming. Not in a good way, or a bad way, but the way that told her she was different and everyone was noticing. That part of her, that part of Ava, it hadn't become alert for a very long time. Seasons were shifting in Ava, that was becoming quite apparent. It scared her more than any fang or claw she had come across in here yet.
She let the silence draw out, her face fixed as if she was playing a game of poker. Her eyes fixed to the flower as the little fire danced around them. It had felt like well over a century after Ava finally broke the silence (and considering the state of their mortality, it very well could have been) "Carrying around a flower like that, people might think that you're going as Romeo for Halloween." she said quietly. She laid the rose back down on the table and propped her head on her elbow, supporting it with her palm on her chin. "Years seem to pass quicker when they have lost their threats of age." she commented, her eyes now locked back on the candle.

---------Jeremy watched silently as she picked up the rose and gently brought it to her face to take in its scent. She was beautiful as ever in the candlelight, a few loose golden curls framing her delicate face while the rest remained gracefully tied back. Her red lips did not smile or frown, but remained almost emotionless, her bright eyes showing through a touch of sadness. Good lord, he wanted her back at his side. ---------"And yet seem an eternity when searching for that which is lost," he said thoughtfully, remembering how long each day seemed when he was trying to locate her after their fight, how long it the days and weeks dragged on throughout the following years. He stood up straight and ambled across the room to where Ava sat. He leaned against the table, half-sitting, and crossed his arms. Turning his head he met her eyes. "And yet when that treasure is found, time becomes a meaningless word once used, because eternity lies before us, not just you or I."

Ava's lips twitched in annoyance and she turned away from him completely, "Speak for yourself." she growled as she crossed her arms over her chest.
So cocky... so confident... so... she felt anger bubbling up for only a moment before it died down, like a fire that used up it's oxygen. Snuffed, Ava stood and stared down at the floor. She suddenly felt very cold. She ran the side of her thumb down her arm, but she wasn't old on the outside. She felt cold on the inside. She swallowed hard and bit the side of her lip, only to taste her own blood, stupid fangs... she shook her head to herself.
Pushing thoughts of Jem away she sat on the table and scooped up her muffin, holding it so close the heat of the candle warmed her nose. She wanted to blow it out but she still didn't even have a wish. She frowned and tried to think harder... what did she want? She knew she had wants but what were they?

---------Jeremy stood up straight again and walked to where he stood beside her. He leaned over and rested one hand on the table, putting the other across her shoulders, and looked at the candle. "Every girl has her dreams," he said softly, his voice causing the flame to dance ever so slightly. "Make a wish, Ava dear." He kept his eyes on the candle but his attention remained on her, her intoxicating scent, her soft golden hair, her entrancing blue eyes.

Ava's skin tingled where Jeremy placed his arm, but she didn't move other than an involuntary flinch. She gave a quiet sigh before closing her eyes and locking on to the one wish she wanted to make, but then again didn't. She felt her lip quiver, almost wanting to burst into tears, before letting a a gust of breath extinguish the nearly melted candle.
Now that Ava was a Vampire, eating for her was pointless. So instead of eating them, she had taken to burying them in the back. It was like a ceremony for her, planting the wish she hoped would grow, but she felt too weak to do that now. All she wanted to do was curl into a little ball and die, what a fabulous birthday this was turning out to be. In fact, the only GOOD birthdays she'd ever had were with Jeremy himself.
And that was the truth.
"Don't- " she paused "Don't call me dear, Jem.". Her voice was firm, but yet forced. It didn't sound like herself to Ava, it sounded like a weak fool that couldn't stand up for herself. A defeated woman who only half-heartedly attempted to lead her own life. Ava swallowed hard and turned her back to him, holding herself together the best she could.

---------Jeremy removed his hand from her shoulder when she turned away from him and instead ran bits of her golden hair through his fingers. He allowed there to be silence after her words for a moment before speaking. "You were always my rose, Ava. You always will be," he said softly. ---------In his time away from her, he had missed her presence. Yes, he found other ways to pass the time, other women to amuse him in her absence, but none were so stunning as she was. He had laid his claim to her years ago and would never let go so long as he lived. And when you live forever, that is a very very long time.

Because the room was so silent, if one had been listening one may have heard the gentle snap as Ava's temper broke way. However, if one had not heard they would have seen nothing of difference until she spun around, pulling her hair from his fingers.
The fire that burned in her eyes was in a flame, burning with a heat hotter than it had it a long time. Instantly she pushed against his chest with all the force she could muster and a low growl nearly escaped the depths of her throat. "I am not yours Jeremy. Since I came here I have been many things, but none of them have been yours." she narrowed her eyes, fear of him and uncertainty about herself vanishing for that minute, just that minute; and it was all she needed.
"Just in case you didn't hear me before, you don't call me dear. Don't call me dear, darling, love, honey or whatever other stupid thing you feel like calling me. I am Ava, that is how you may address me. I am mine and mine alone, not yours or any other damn person's." her fists clamped together like magnets to metal, her nails dug into her skin and her eyes burned with an intensity past anger, past agony and past fear. It burned with her, with Ava, and for that minute she felt whole again.

---------Jeremy scowled as she suddenly pulled away and spat her words out in bitterness. A mix of emotions met him, like some shred of humanity within him was fighting against the instincts of his vampiric nature. He wanted to clamp down like a dog and never let go, but he knew she would only tear away, but he could not bring himself to be gentle, not with his words, not at a time like this. "Alright then, Ava," his tone was cold, none of the sweet affection from before showing through. "I'll call you by your common name. And you'll call me by mine. From now on I don't want to hear 'Jem' or 'Jeremy'. You'll call me Banks. Just like everyone else." ---------Without warning he grabbed her hair and pulled her roughly forward into a kiss before shoving her to the floor and walking away without any thought for how it might hurt her. He then left the room, his footsteps echoing in the empty halls, leaving her what he hoped was a sorry mess on the floor, and hoping that she would come to her senses.

Ava narrowed her eyes when he scowled, then felt him pull her in. She struggled back from his grasp, but the older, more experienced vampire easily held her tight. He pushed her to the ground and she caught herself with her forearm and watched him leave the room. Once he was out of earshot she felt herself fall into tears.
She wiped her face with her wrist and pulled herself up, leaning against the table once more. She held her limbs close to her body, trying to cease the avalanche of fear, panic and self-pity. Anger also bubbled within her, she felt it rise and give way, having the rawest urge to throw something. However the only thing near was her muffin-turned birthday cake. She grabbed it tightly in her hand, squashing it into a ball and threw it to wall, letting it splatter and crumble. She wiped her eyes once more, realizing what she was doing, and slowly recuperated and began to make her way back to her office.
