( IMMOBILIZED BY FEAR)
DON'T TURN AWAY, DON'T GIVE IN TO THE PAIN DON'T TRY TO HIDE THOUGH
THEY'RE SCREAMING YOUR NAME, DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES, GOD KNOWS WHAT
LIES BEHIND THEM DON'T TURN OUT THE LIGHT NEVER SLEEP NEVER DIE I'M
( THAT THERE'S MUCH MORE TO COME )It wasn’t quite like the ponds at home, but it was good enough. It was quiet, there were fish swimming around, and the water was almost the perfect temperature. Still cold, but not too cold that they couldn’t go for a little dip.
A single swan paddled around in a circle, his head dipped down to look into the murky water. It seemed that the fowl could just barely see the shadows of the fish swimming beneath the surface. Every few minutes he would suddenly shoot his head under the surface, dipping almost his entire front half into the cold water. Only sometimes he would come back up with a fish in his bill, but he was catching enough to fill his stomach.
Luella lied nearby on her stomach, head pillowed on her arms and bare feet lifted into the air, kicking slightly. She watched her beautiful swan friend swim around, enjoy his time on the pond. Her expression was flat, eyes half lidded against the bright light filtered through the tree tops.
“Boris,” she called softly, extending a hand toward the lake and tilting her head slightly to the side.
The swan lifted his head out of the water and turned toward his soul mate before jumping out of the water and soaring parallel to the waves, swooping closer to her. He landed gracefully on the soft ground and waddled awkwardly toward her, a tiny little fish in his bill. Boris dropped the fish into her palm and then dove back into the pond, looking for a few more.
Her pink tongue wet her lips as Luella twisted into a sitting position, holding the flopping fish in her palms. It was slimy and the scales were rough and grey. She stared at it for a while, moving her hands to keep it from jumping out of her palm. After a while it fell still, having tired itself out. Mouth gaping, it gasped for breath and Luella just watched it with a strange fascination until even those movements stopped.
Blinking slowly, she put the fish down on the ground and watched it some more. Still, it didn’t move. She touched it and poked it, but it didn’t squirm. Smiling, she picked it up by the tail and lifted it high before lowering it into her open mouth. It slid wetly down her throat as she swallowed.
“Obliged,” she muttered, laying back down on her stomach to watch her swan.
